Difference? - madprof

LAME is an entirely different encoder, and can handle variable bit rate encoding. try encoding with the --alt preset standard option and compare to say iTunes AAC 160 or iTunes MP3 192. If you can't hear the different forget LAME. But most can hear a big difference. LAME is not faster nor does it produce smaller files. It produces the optimal file size for the level of quality that YOU specify.

Probably the biggest difference between (open source) LAME and the (licensed) Frauenhofer (sp?) encoder is that Frauenhofer cuts all frequencies above 16KHz which they claim is a fair tradeoff between file size, speed of encoding and psychoacoustics (FM radio, except for a 19KHz pilot signal, doesn't transmit >16KHz). LAME gives you the whole 20Hz-20KHz bandwidth if you request it, and this is where people notice the difference.
