Displeased that I need to buy new hardware to benefit from latest version of Safari - Bytesmiths

Aw man! I've got an Apple IIe that I was planning to run the latest Safari on! Boy, Apple really sucks for not supporting older hardware! :-)

Get a grip. Or better yet, get a Wintel machine. Then you'll REALLY experience "hardware thrash." IDC reports that Macs stay in service at least 50% longer.

But the bottom line is, computers obsolesce. Get over it.

Wow - you must be one of the Apple employees he was discussing earlier. Smug, self-righteous for all the wrong reasons. Just because you have access to a machine that can handle Panther and/or you can afford to upgrade doesn't give you the right to disparage another user who questions these outright extortionist upgrade tactics from Apple.

Displeased that I need to buy new hardware to benefit from latest version of Safari - D.C.

I know of no OS X compatible G3 that will run 10.2 but not 10.3. I haven't upgraded to 10.3 yet either, but I'm not going to get mad at Apple for not releasing new software for an older version of the OS.

There are many changes to the development environment and OS in 10.3 that could make creating a 10.2 version of this update difficult and time consuming. At the very least they would have to maintain and test two different code bases. This is not a good use of resources as they are trying to rapidly improve Safari.

Greed - nemoinis

Every other commercial developper out there maintains multiple code streams for multiple OS versions. It's trivial, especially for something as similar as 10.2 and 10.3 (I have 20 years of professional software engineering experience to back this claim). In fact Apple does it too, viz the security updates they still send for older OS versions.
The real reason for making useful updates in 10.3 only is the same reason cars are rounded one year and square the next: greed; i.e, to make you want to buy the most recent product. And there is nothing wrong with that (legally speaking - ethics being set aside). What is wrong is that Apple isn't just introducing new features: they are fixing serious defects, and making you pay for fixes that should be covered by an implied warranty.

I wouldn't necessarily consider them 'rushing' to improve Safari - how long since the last update? Of course its great that Safari can take advantage of the new code in Panther, but the fact that they can so quickly shrug off their users who haven't dished out the bucks for a new system hardly a couple months old is abhorrent. Apple needs some serious customer relations seminars.
