Why do misguided users gripe about things they know NOTHING about? - Bryan Pietrzak

I am curious why Brian would make a snide comment about WindowShade or any of Unsanity's haxies. I have used them all (haxies) and have NEVER found any instability caused on ANY of the 18 various Macs I manage and use.

Don't take my word for it. Ask Unsanity. They'll tell you: there have been dozens of extension, application and OS conflicts with their "haxies". It is probably documented in their version notes. Ask other developers (for example on the carbon list) how many times they've gotten a bug report only to track it down to a piece of software that is patching (usually a haxie or Default Folder).

Don't get me wrong, I understand the desire to have things in OS X that Apple didn't provide. But is it worth the price of having the same problems we had in OS 9?

Wouldn't you gripe about a customization to your car that caused it to stop working, or worse, explode?

btw: I've never said anything about Watson, not sure why you brought them up.

My beef is specifically with developers that patch and don't explain clearly to users what they are doing so that uses can make their own decisions about whether or not they want to install something that can compromise their entire system. Event though I think what these developers are doing is flat out wrong, they should at least be upfront about it and just give users the ability to make informed decisions.

I don't take issue with your plea for disclosure... - SPI...master...

But I DO take issue with irresponsible "flame" commentary on this site. Nowhere in your original post do you say that you "just want disclosure"... yet in your second post, you say "All I want is disclosure. If you want to risk code that patches fine" .

How about adequate disclosure in YOUR commentary instead of trashing the particular app, haxie, or programmer by saying something like "Shame on you Unsanity"...

You could have just said something like "Gee folks, haxies like these can really destabilize systems...and although I don't know of specific issues with this particular program I highly recommend that you use with extreme caution and use at your own risk...developers really need to disclose the problems that these apps can cause...blah, blah..." That would have been far more usefull to the readers here than just seeing a flame commentary, don't you think?

The quality of comments on this site and Macfixit and other threads are important to help people decide whether the rewards of using the app outweigh the penalty of possible instability. Constructive commentary pushes quality in the right direction...
