E-mail support? I want an IM client, not an AOL "You've Got Mail!" alert.
Ticker/news support? I want an IM client, not some corporate-created news "ticker".
Linking iChat and Address Book has never "crapped up" things for me. It's somewhat convenient to have all that info in one place and have it accessed by multiple programs.
