1) You are using the most current version of iPod software

2) In iTunes you have selected Firewire disk mode for your iPod. You may have to set your iPod to manually update.
When you select your iPod in iTunes there will be 4 buttons along the bottom of the window. Push the one on the left (the one with the little iPod symbol on it.) The preferences window it opens will have these options.
