Not sure the comment about 8MB cache drives is accurate. I've just installed 10.2 on a 185GB IBM/Hitachi drive with the 4.5 Firmware installed on a Tempo 133. It has quiet happly booted that installation and is very quick. I asume it must be the type of drive you have that is causing the problem.
