I am aware of the problems many users had and are still having to access the upgrade download page.
As I posted earlier this morning (EDT USA), I had no problem accessing the download page, log in, be recognized as being entitled to an upgrade ($40.00), paying on-line, and downloading the software.
After applying the upgrade, and entering the new registration code, I could launch Windows XP Pro SP3, where the VMware tools installation process was automatic. Improved performance of Windows.
Ditto with Linux Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. The Tools installation process was easier: Ubuntu downloaded the Tools software, and I had to proceed manually, as in previous instances.
In both virtual machines, the new Tool Bar, with Apple's colored wiedgets is a welcome graphical change.

Good upgrade software. - bweylock
So you're rubbing it in again? The page is an abomination. I'm stunned that a company like VMware would allow this to happen.one happy thought is that they underestimated demand by a large margin. it's the first major upgrade for a long time, while their user base has probably expanded considerably.
