I long ago switched over to Firefox from Safari when it looked as if Safari were full of security holes. I've never turned back. I discovered the plug-in there and besides having an entire category dedicated to security, there are several password "rememberers" for lack of a better word. Of them there is LastPass and it has worked flawlessly for over a year now...
...and it's FREE.
For those worried about keeping their passwords safe online, there is a version for self-hosting. What's more, it will sync itself across your Macs and Windows machines through Firefox and keep them all up-to-date.
All communications are encrypted and you can pick and choose which passwords to keep and which ones to ignore in autofill.
Short of spending $40 here for what I'm sure is a good product judging by the reviews, I'd give LastPass and Firefox a whirl first. Just a suggestion for those who could benefit by saving that $40 until the economy bounces back.

For those on a budget I suggest LastPass plug-in and Firefox - Jason!
Yes, but what if you don't normally drink any kind of coffee, alcoholic beverages, smoke or otherwise waste your spare change frivolously on such soft-core drugs? Hence, bad times affect different people in different ways.I have been blessed enough (for the time being anyway) to have been able to afford version 2.x of this software, courtesy of MacHeist. I have found 1Password to be indispensable. Even if you didn't get it via MacHeist, you really do get a lot for what they charge, and it's updated regularly. It is rare among software OS X titles in that it's worth the price. But again, that assumes you can afford the price. But if you cannot afford it, it's probably best to avoid VersionTracker altogether as there are many software titles here vying for your spare change.

Whatever reason you don't want to spend $40 doesn't matter. I think it's great when a someone suggests an alternative. That's what the VT community is all about. And there are many, many free apps here, so what's the problem? I used 1Password to login to make this comment but I could have also used the password vault built into Firefox. Both remember my username and password. Both work. 1Password has tons more features and syncs with my iPhone but the other is free. So chill folks, it's no big deal.Monday, October 12 2009 @ 03:26 PM PDT

Sure, many browsers have some sort of password management. However, what I like about 1Password is that it's independent of my browser, so I can use it with Safari, Firefox, or any of the other supported browsers... all at the same time and without having to set it up in each browser. Practically speaking, it means that if today I'm in Safari when I setup a new forum user account, 1Password will help me automatically login to that same account tomorrow while I'm using Firefox. I find that I'm now free to use very robust and unique passwords for each login that I have, without having to remember which browser I originally saved the password in.Monday, October 12 2009 @ 09:26 PM PDT

If people are scrimping to save $40, the economy is never going to bounce back. 1Password is worth far more than a few lattes or packs of smokes.Reply to This
