A couple of freeware widgets that check various sources for updates to your installed apps and widgets fairly thorough and reasonably reliable.They occasionally miss apps that you've stored in an unusual folder. They can't distinguish between, say, v 3.2 and v 3.2.1 if the program developer has forgotten to add the extra .1 to the program info, but in that case you can tell them to stop checking that particular program. Otherwise simple and straightforward.
