v.8 opens and seems to work faster than previous versions, at least it does for me in Snow Leopard.
I gave this a straight average rating of 3 stars mainly because, for all that it does, it just does a bit too much in some areas and lacks some seemingly simple things common in other programs.
For example, as far as I can tell it still has no way to highlight selected text, which to me is a simple and necessary feature for a notes program. Yet the program has a zillion other features (most of which I do not use).
I have also never been thrilled by the fact that SOHO Notes uses a separately created and produced database called OpenBase. Installation, uninstallation, & updating of SOHO Notes is made more complicated by OpenBase. OpenBase is NOT Chronos software. I had a problem with SOHO Notes v.7 updating which locked me out of my own database completely until I realized I had to select the additional installation of the database engine in the SOHO installer, which (for some reason) was not selected by default. If SOHO Notes must have a database ( and not separate files for each note), then Chronos should write and maintain their own database. Actually, I prefer that a notes program maintain each note in a separate file (which I think is a safer and more flexible approach).
I really only recommend SOHO Notes to those who like some feature or features that SOHO Notes has that separate it from other software.

Version 8 DOESN'T use anymore OpenSQL, it uses CoreData, the SQLite dabase system that's inside Mac OS X itself. It is the MAIN and REAL big difference with previous version. So before telling things like that, you should take some time to turn your tongue 7 times in the mouth, look at some information (even only read the read me file that explains that this important move maks trouble for users that used to use SOHO Notes sharing function).
I used SOHO Notes 6/7 and now 8 for managing all my professional documentation – and I had my part of problems, yes –, but I think it is a great product, far more functional than so limited softwares like Yojimbo (the Yojimbo version 2 is a joke after two years waiting for something new happens).

From their blog (easily found from their homepage):August 27, 2009
Sixteen months ago, we began the enormous undertaking of rewriting the core engine of SOHO Notes and SOHO Organizer from scratch in order to improve the speed of these products. This required throwing away years of work to create a new engine based on Apple’s extremely-fast Core Data.

With version 8, SOHO Notes does no longer use OpenBase (and that is good news), but uses CoreData.Reply to This
