What does your platform support? And which OS is installed?

Core2Duo or Xeon is 64-bit NOT CoreDuo - friedchikkin

The file name should be "vlc-1.0.2-intel64.dmg", otherwise you downloaded the 32-bit version.

Go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html for specific versions.
