LAST PARAGRAPH of the intro text (because we all read these things 'til the end, right? Nothing to hide, nothing to hide!):
"This installer also includes a browser plug-in for Microsoft® Silverlight™, which allows you to play Smooth Streaming video content. This is installed by default. To disable its installation, click the Customize button on the Installation Type pane and uncheck the Microsoft Silverlight Plug-in option."
What exactly do we NEED this plug-in for again?
Flip4Mac WMV
Import, export and play WMAs & WMVs in QuickTime.

I guess I read. It's always wise to check the custom install options. I sometimes save disk space by opting out of part of the installer. I sometimes see wanted extras that are not installed by default. As for why Silverlight might be needed...
Netflix streaming would be why I have it installed.
As for why this installer defaults to installing it...
Flip4Mac aims to be "one stop shopping" for Windows media playback. Unfortunately, Microsoft has locked up a lot of Windows media playback with Silverlight. There's no insidious plot.
