Seems to be the trend today with the advent of Snow Leopard that developers' are jumping their version numbers several notches. First, it was Path Finder (5.1.6 to 5.5.0) and now iVolume. I guess they want to get to the upgrade paths quicker that usual?

Version Jump from 3.1.5 to 3.5? - zunipus

I can see your point. But it is also a convenient way for a developer to place a milestone in the application version.

If you want to see truly heinous version jacking, check out what Google have perpetrated with Chrome. The thing isn't even out of beta and its already past version 4. That's F O U R. Explain that one. IMHO they're attempting to catch up with Safari's version number and surpass FireFox's version number. The last time I saw version jacking this bad was Microsoft Internet Explorer. Windows version jacking also comes to mind. Evil. But I rant...
