At the time of this note, Google Earth has a rating of 2.1. How can this be?

This is a remarkable program that is offered for free.

Whenever I need to take a break, I simply fire up Google Earth and explore the world. It makes me feel like I've been to places that would otherwise be impossible to visit.

The main reason, if you don't know about it, is that since version 5 GE introduced an autoupdater that installs stuff in your computer at root level, which connect to the net every 2 hours or so.
There are no other apps which dare to do so, not even Apple ones.

Such thing is unacceptable, dangerous and not necessary, since a common "upgrade on demand" feature would be more than enough.

I've checked and I don't see any Google or Keystone processes running. I see no evidence that there is an auto-update process running. Nor do I ever remember authorizing the installation of such a process (which would have been required to get it running as root).

Point me to where I can see this process running.

First run has you authorize it, and the dialog has a link to their privacy policy.

I trashed it at that point. I'll use the old version til they stop supporting it, and then I'll use the online. They say it's "safer" to them to autoupdate me than for me to manually update Google products.
I think not.

Simply delete ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.google.keystone.agent.plist to disable the checker.

I see. The random user is supposed to know to do this. Does Google mention it in their privacy policy? I thought not.
