Running Parallels Desktop 4.0 build 3844.
Launch it, automatic update kicks in, runs for a few seconds, nothing happens.
Try again, this time manually using the Check for Updates option.
Runs for a few seconds, and declares peremptorily ...you have the latest version of Parallels software.... Tried it twice, same results.
This cannot be trusted, and this is why I prefer to use VMware.
