I have/had a pre Snow Leopard version of SD. When I download this post 'SLeopard version' it wants me to register and pay.
Where is it a free upgrade?
Is Time Machine better now in SLeopard?

Have you tried doing a software update via SuperDuper? That's the route I took, and always recommend whenever possible. Downloading stand-alone updaters should be a last resort.

Use a little common sense.
If you own it, re-register it.
If you P2Pd it, SOL.

If it asks you to register, you just have to re-register it. It's a question of ONE click.
