I have tried the unofficial fix (changing the max bundle bit), but am unable to get PH to work with Sl.
Might someone know the secret to PH success or where I may have messed up?

Give this a shot, it worked for me. Unfortunately it means running Safari in 32-bit mode...o Right-click on Safari.app
o Click "Get Info"
o Check the box that says "Open in 32-bit mode"
o Run Safari, and you should now get a SIMBL error. This means that PithHelmet is trying to load. Close Safari
o Edit the file "/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/PithHelmet.bundle/Contents/Info.plist" (After backing it up, of course!)
o Look for "<key>MaxBundleVersion</key>" down towards the bottom; now look at the next line. It's the <string> line.
o Change the number to 9999.9
o Save the file
o Start Safari. PithHelmet should now be running!

Using the above plist modification works, sort of. You will get an error that some sort of plugin failed to load. Other than that, yes it works.S.

Actually, I don't get any kind of error, and it works perfectly for me. I'm perfectly happy running in 32 bit mode, until such a time as the plugin is updated-I mean, it's been good enough for the last few years :-). The good news about this is that it looks like SIMBL might just need a 64 bit recompile to work properly. Of course, that may be more difficult than it sounds, depending on how it was written.Sunday, August 30 2009 @ 12:23 PM PDT

Actually I'm getting the error on launch too. But PithHelmet seems to work fine, so it's good enough for the moment!Monday, September 07 2009 @ 08:13 PM PDT

I should have caught this earlier as it answers the question. Alas it's not the answer I wanted. From the developer's site:
"As far as I know, PithHelmet (and more importantly SIMBL) is not compatible with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). Once I get a new Intel-based Mac with Snow Leopard, I'll look into it."

I fear this could be a very long wait...
