Excuse me, but how many Web Browsers can you name that are 64 bit besides Safari?

That's what I thought!

@griff--2008 "Excuse me, but how many Web Browsers can you name that are 64 bit besides Safari?"

What's that got to do with the OP's question? Google is positioning their app as the browser of the future with "sophisticated" new technologies. With that claim as a backdrop, the OP's question was right on the money.

No, the question is: name the reason you *need* (as opposed to "want") a 64-bit browser.

Or even, describe what 64-bit actually means.

Oh, and to answer the other part of your question griff--2008, the underutilized iCab 4.6.5 Beta 82 is 64-bit.

To answer the why... yet again. On Snow Leopard having all apps 64-bit reduces memory usage significantly by not loading any of the 32-bit system libraries. This is important to many of us that already bump up against memory limits. There's the small percentage points average speedup but for me personally that's very secondary.

To answer the which others, Firefox 3.7 alpha is also available as a MacOS 64-bit build though it's only nominally useful as no third-party extensions are built for it yet.
