Existing users, 
I just installed it via SoftwareUpdate on several Macs... No slowdowns, no issues at all.
I haven't had to zap my PRAM since I installed some RAM like 6 years ago!
One piece of advice, install AppleJack and use that in single user mode. Much more comprehensive than just running fsck.
