This is getting ridiculous since it's been a problem ever since version 3...does Apple not acknowledge the fact that .gif's freeze Safari for a good minute or so. I get the dreadful spinning beachball, making the browser unusable. This makes forum browsing (among other sites) nearly impossible and extremely frustrating. The problem has persisted on 3 Macs i've tried (both PPC and Intel).
Firefox doesn't have this problem, but i'd rather use Safari...please fix this.

Perhaps you could post an example URL, as I've not found animated gifs to be a problem - I just visited a whole page of them to be sure, without issue.Tuesday, August 11 2009 @ 05:50 PM PDT

Try this:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=355091
Scroll through that page and please comment on whether or not Safari 4 locks up for you.

Works OK for me, too. Takes a while to load (I have a slow internet connection), and when scrolling up and down it can seem like it hangs with beachball, but after a little while it comes back good again.I'll grant you Firefox is more responsive under the same circumstances.

Yup, Safari (4.0.3 on 10.5.8) chokes on that forum page here, too, on G4/G5/Intel-based systems. Camino handles it at least on the Intel system.Tuesday, August 11 2009 @ 07:07 PM PDT

PS: Given enough time it eventually loaded on my Intel mini but something somewhere's not right with that.Tuesday, August 11 2009 @ 07:14 PM PDT

Same here, smooth in Camino (my default browser too), dogslow in Safari.Problem is worse on older hardware, but very evident on both my 12" PowerBook and intel iMac.

Just to clarify, this doesn't happen with normal .gif extension images, just the animated ones.Reply to This
