After installing the new version, I found my license key no longer worked.

You get a free upgrade license if you happened to have bought it July 3rd of 2008 or sooner.
I happened to have bought just slightly previous to that, so I am supposed to pay out the full price again if I want compatibility with the imminent OS X 10.6. There is no discounted upgrade at all for loyal version 1.xx purchasers.
