Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: NO

The following comments are not mine alone. Go to Apple discussions and look up comments on IPhoto 8.03.

IPhoto 8.0 and updates is a huge memory hog. My Activity monitor registered in excess of 130 mb.

This new version is very slow. Since I only have 512 mb of memory most of the editing features are very slow or don't work at all. I have tried everything, except more memory, and even that might not work. I have explored Apple discussions, called Apple Tech and nothing solves it. I also only have 3,000 picts.

Though the face recognition is great, it is not worth it with this slow hog. Save your money and stay with 7.0 and or use Adobe Elements. (only uses 2.5mb of memory) Once you order the software and use it, Apple will not take it back.

IPhoto 8.0 and updates - sepdx

With only 512 MBs of memory a lot of things will run slow if you have more then one application open. I have 4 GBs of memory and don't have any application that runs slow on my Mac Pro.

That's a bit lame to rate this with 1 star in all areas when you've only got 512MB available for your whole machine. Of course it will run slow with that little memory - and so will everything else of any real ilk. Your operating system will take 4/5 of that memory available. Yes, maybe iPhoto will launch but don't expect real performance from it when you're doing the equivalent of running an old car on a teaspoon of gas.

I must agree with the previous two comments. With only 512MB of RAM what do you expect? iPhoto 8 with well over 10K photos preforms very well on my iMac with 4GB. It's not perfect but it's certainly worth more than one star. I'd give it 4 ****.

I didn't think ANYone still used only 512K of memory. Sounds like it's time to upgrade your machine and your memory.

Since you're using iLife '09, you're running OS X 10.5.
Since Apple clearly states that 512 MB RAM is the BARE MINIMUM system memory required to run 10.5, your review is not only completely nutz, but is going to get slammed by a lot of people.

You are an ignoramus - ZZBaron

It would have been one thing if you simply posted a comment, then, after reading the inevitable replies, you would have been able to realize that attempting to run iPhoto 8 alongside OS X 10.5 was simply foolhardy and your problems were your own fault. Instead, you unfairly rated it 1 star as a result of your own ignorance.
As previous posters have already pointed out, 512 MB is BARELY enough to boot your computer, let alone run iPhoto. Upgrade your RAM to at least 2GB, or upgrade your computer. Until then quit posting ignorant, foolish ratings on a great (well, pretty good, anyway) product when you don't have the capability to even run it on your computer. Ass.

actually, even if iphoto 8 uses 130MB, then it should run reasonably on a 512MB machine IF there are no other apps open that use much memory. e.g. no Safari, MS Word/Excel, etc., and the less the better.

i've tried it, so this isn't just theorizing. i'm used to using a much faster/newer machine (i.e. i'd notice if a system/app was slow), but maintain a lab of old g4 emacs, most of which have 512MB memory, and i test everything so i'm sure they are very usable.

however, upping your memory to 1GB, or even 768MB, will make a big difference in overall usability of your machine.

iphoto 8 does take a lot of time while doing initial face recognition scanning, so that could affect things.

however - i agree with the others: a 1 star rating really isn't deserved here.
