Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 1-6 months

Recommend Product: NO

While Parallels 4.0 works fine on my MacBook Pro 2.5, it is fairly responsive, works at a reasonable speed, and the connectivity with the MAC is fine too - I JUST HATE THIS PROGRAM. I am a light user of M$ Windows and more than 90% of the time I am not working in parallel. I want to turn Parallels on only when I WANT TO, and I want it ALWAYS in WINDOW mode (NO Coherence mode). However, Parallels knows better, THEY START PARALLELS whenever they decide (there are these two red parallel lines added to some icons - I have no control of that) and BOOM - here comes PARALLELS. MOREOVER - in these case it launches in the awful Coherence mode and a notification “YOU ARE WORKING IN COHERENCE MODE” (no one asks me if I want that - and no one cares what I set in the preferences). Immediately afterwards I am being asked (thanks a lot) if I want to let Windows\Parallels to access my entire HD - which I certainly don’t. Then, when I go back to Window mode - the setting of the window is OF COURSE full screen (and not my default 1024x752). Developers of Parallels - IF I WANTED WINDOWS I would just go and buy a Windows machine. The point is that I don’t want windows, and I use it only when there is a file that doesn’t fit MAC. Remember how OS-X asked us if we want to launch Classic Mode BEFORE booting classic environment (even if we double clicked a classic application of file), that’s the way it should be ! Here take your 1 star as this is what you deserve.

Annoying application - Leto_Parallels

Hi osos10, I'm Sean with Parallels.
I'm sorry to see you've had such a frustrating time. Parallels does realize there are many users out there who only need a couple Windows applications. For those who want a minimal interaction between Mac OS X and Windows, Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac is equipped with a couple options, and there are some tips I have which might help you out with that.

First off, while Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac is open, go to the Mac menu bar under "Virtual Machine" and click "Configure..." - (Your Windows VM doesn't have to be started).

This menu helps you fine tune your virtual machine so it behaves the way you like. If you look under the "Startup and Shutdown" section, you'll see the first drop-down menu lets you set how Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac opens on startup (Coherence, Windowed, etc...).

Further down is the "Shared Applications" where you can set whether or not to share programs between your Windows and Mac OS X interface. The icons you referred to with the red Parallels mark are Windows programs, so that's why your virtual machine is launched when you click them. They need Windows running in order to launch, and they're placed on the Mac dock for convenience (and they can be removed if you'd like via this menu).

I hope this helps, but if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me directly at sgibbons@parallels.com

Annoying application - osos10

Dear Sean,

Thanks for your note, and I disabled the "application sharing" option. Please be advised that as soon as I installed parallels 4, I DID chose the WINDOW mode in the "startup and shutdown" menu. Nonetheless, whenever parallel is activated by double clicking a file that is associated with M$-windows (as opposed to starting up by choosing the Parallel application), parallels starts in coherence mode and NOT in window mode. I suppose that if this is not intentionally so, then it is a bug !
