As a sole practitioner trying to keep costs down I have been looking for something modestly priced to save my time scanning documents and receipts for tax related purposes. The IRS will accept good quality scans. Most vendors I have encountered accept scans, even for returns. While there are a few rebate offers that will accept only originals, my personal experience is that more and more are willing, even desire scans. Further, I am not looking for a high quality OCR. I already have that. Rather I'm looking for quick and relatively simple for daily record keeping and clutter reduction.

It seems that Paperless is a customized iPhoto for receipts and documents. That I like. It also seems to add limited, alphanumeric OCR that can be used for data entry via QIF exchange format. To me that is helpful, but not essential. I prefer the direct data entry into Quicken or iBank.

What concerns me more about Paperless, is that Mariner says up front that it works best on Fujitsu ScanSnap or Pentax DS Mobile scanners. They also say problems have been reported on HP and Epson scanners and that Canon, Brother and Lexmark scanner users have reported problems. And, I happen to have Epson scanners. So the issue for me is not, the reasonably priced $50.00 software, but the requirement to buy another scanner for hundreds.

I would appreciate any reviews that relate to using Paperless with the scanners mentioned above, in my case particularly Epson.

Note to VersionTracker: I would appreciate the option of "Neither" under "Recommend..." when submitting a commentary. In this case I'm forced to either recommend or not. Since I'm hopeful in this case I selected "Yes", but I am really not recommending at this point.

I began using ReceiptWallet in 2006, now Paperless. I have an HP Photosmart 2710 which worked fine with ReceiptWallet until an update in December 2008. My workaround works with Paperless (you should be be able to do something similar):

Scan using HP Scan Pro choosing the option "Scan to: PDF to Preview"

Once the document opens in Preview, click print, then choose PDF>Save
PDF to Paperless

I wish I had noticed this before posting the first time... - capitalj

Instead of hitting "Enter" to accept a scan, I just accidentally hit Command-P. The print dialog appeared, and I chose PDF>Save PDF to Paperless.

I don't know why I didn't think to try that before.

o far so good. Been using this since it's release. The reviews for Receipt Wallet were great and a friend had upgraded from receipt wallet and really liked this software so I thought I'd try it. I use it to organize more than 5000 PDF's that were floating around my computer both work and personal items. I now have all IRS documents (checked with the IRS and its OK), paperwork from our income property, insurance policies, medical records, etc organized, tagged and easy to locate.

I settled on this because after months with Yep! I had some concerns about retaining the effort i had put into it. Devonthink Pro Office was over kill for my needs, had an extremely detailed and cumbersome learning curve and I did not like the interface at all (very un-Mac like). In addition I have used Yojimbo, SOHO Notes, together and on and on.

I like the fact that my actual documents were not herded into a proprietary database (this program gives you the option to not move everything). Yep also does not move your data to a database but on more than one occasion I was unable to recover my metadata (and that was a lot of work lost).

With regard to OCR, the program does do OCR on the receipt side but OCR has not been added to the PDF side yet. However, most of the competition does not do OCR either. Devonthink Pro Office does but for the $100+ difference between the price tags of the two it should.
I was able to figure the program out and get up and running within a few minutes. I spoke with the developers and suggested some additional features (one being OCR) and they seemed very interested and indicted that OCR could be coming. PDF's I want OCR for I do in Acobat right now. But as I said, so far so good.
