Google Earth includes an updater that will run as a root owned process every 2 hours.

Little Snitch To The Rescue - pendragon

All the more reason to have Little Snitch. It won't hamper the GE operation, nor does it alter the GE configuration, but it does preclude it from calling home.

It works great, but it is a bit pricy (IMNHO) $29.95. http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html
