Transmission has locked up on me before, in other versions over the last year or two. And it just did it to me again with the latest version. I used to swear by Transmission, but these crashes have used up all my patience. The worst part is that when it locks up, it REALLY locks up. Force quit as many times as you want. It won't budge from the dock. Meanwhile, the files it was downloading can't be deleted. The only fix is to restart the system. I'm done with this.

uTorrent works fine for me. Except for the 100% CPU bug that hit 0.9.1.1 and just fixed in 0.9.1.2RC, it's been faster and more reliable than any version of Transmission I've used in the last couple of years. Even Tomato Torrent and Bits on Wheels gave me fewer problems than Transmission. So call uTorrent a joke if you want; I'm using that instead of sticking with something just because that's what you're familiar with. I'm not hidebound to any one application. You say to find out what works for me and use it. That's not Transmission.Thursday, May 07 2009 @ 11:10 PM PDT

It's a BETA - GNJ
Which means it is unproven, possibly buggy -- put out there by the developer to "shake out" any problems that may not be evident to him/her. Most developers don't have the full range of hardware/ installed program assortments that we have. They also don't have our eyeballs and mindsets. Soooo -- they use us to help polish the product by releasing a beta.If you choose to use a beta, you should be willing to accept the risks involved **AND** the obligation to communicate with the developer.
It sounds like you either don't understand "beta" --- or you don't have the where-with-all do deal with them.
Stick to final stable releases --- those without a "b" in the version -- ;)

I fully understand what a beta is. I've been a registered beta tester for quite a few applications and I've been using Macs for over 20 years now. You're making unfounded assumptions that you know a lot more than I do. For instance, I, for one, know that there's no such thing as "where-with-all." It's "wherewithal." What you seem to have skipped over in your zeal to criticize is that I have had this exact problem with previous NON-beta versions of Transmission.Thursday, May 07 2009 @ 11:01 PM PDT

I mean previous versions of Transmission, not non-beta since they never left beta. If they couldn't stomp the bug over the course of two years, just how long am I supposed to wait? Do they think they're Google, who has legendarily perpetually beta apps?Thursday, May 07 2009 @ 11:04 PM PDT

You really should take a look at the Transmission forums. I doubt you will find any software product for the Macintosh, freeware or paid, that is so well supported by the developers. I mean these guys are constantly releasing new versions left and right that fix bugs and add features. On their forums they pretty much go out of their way to support users and its not like they get much in return. Your problems might not be ONLY Transmission related but could be something else related to your system. Don't tell me its not because regardless of how much Mac experience you have you don't know what the problem is, or you would have resolved it. Posting a crashlog on the Transmission forums will you get you a lot further than crying on VersionTracker.Tuesday, May 12 2009 @ 08:44 PM PDT

I hate when people go "oh, I've been using a Mac for 20 years". That means abso*censored*ing nothing. I know people who have been using Macs since 1984 and they're a support nightmare, while others who have been using a Mac only a couple of years are light-years ahead of them. So, stop pretending that it means something, because it means exactly a$$, particularly when you have not proven that you know a single thing.Monday, May 11 2009 @ 09:48 PM PDT

I haven't yet finished downloading a whole file but I did experience "delay" when quitting Transmission as this commenter suggests. However, I waited a while, it seemed like a long while as whiles do when one is waiting. My guess it was less than ten minutes however and the program did quit.
I observed via iPulse that the communications were still active during the quitting of Transmission. I've seen the same sort of thing with peer-to-peer on XP using Limewire. It seems like the internet just does not want to give up though that is probably whatever little subroutine the programs use.
So my advice is be patient.
Sometimes I wait up to half an hour for other OSX "delays" to complete and usually my patients wins. Seldom do I force quit or force shutdown for many of the non-beach ball delays that give the appearance of an operation hanging.
Utilities such as iPulse and Activity Monitor go a long way to help one be patient but you have to have them running all the time, as I do, in order to see what might be going on. And they still don't help during and "extended" shutdown or restart. They also consume resources especially when on the rapid update settings.
Unfortunately not everything is light-switch speed.... yet.
As far as Transmission goes I like the way it works for the limited use I've given it. It starts up nice from where it left off when Quit. And the settable speed limit override is nice. Though I'd like see it go into speed limit override based upon whether the user had been inactive for a set number of minutes.
Checking the Peers window I also see lots of Transmission users out there and is the most popular program currently in use.

Okay, I now officially hate Transmission - s.elings
A LEOPARD PROBLEMFrom the Transmission forums I've understood that these very serious problems are a Leopard issue: there are zero reports of this on Macs running Tiger or Panther. The Quick Look server in Leopard apparently gets confused trying to index the torrent files while they're still downloading.
A suggested fix is to instruct Spotlight NOT to index the Downloads Folder: System Preferences >> Spotlight >> Privacy >> add Download Folder.
I recently upgraded to Leopard and was wary to continue using Transmission because of the many horror stories. Decided to try it anyway after exempting my DownloadsFolder from Spotlight indexing. Experienced no problems. ( OSX 10.5.6)

Thanks,

I just stopped using it, that's all. Besides, don't you know that there's no problem? You and I are just stupid users who know nothing, that's all. Just ask "versiontracker2007." I guess companies just love to allow know-nothings beta testing their software. (I'm referring to registered beta testers, not public betas.)Sunday, August 16 2009 @ 02:46 PM PDT

You should visit the Transmission forums for help on troubleshooting. I myself prefer an older version (1.22) as it is rock solid on my system. Nobody is forcing you to use the newest version. I suggest finding an older version that works best for you and periodically check the newer versions to see if they work for you. For me this is the best option considering that the rest of the Bittorrent applications for the Mac are a joke.Reply to This
