They abandoned YM around version 2.5, and this 3.0 beta thing's been going on for almost 2 years. But at least when you compare it to the original 3.0 beta, it's made some progress. There's audio AND video, and can make calls, supports SMS (in some countries) and mobile devices.
Which could not be said for MSN (seriously, no significant new features since version 3.0, or even earlier!?) or AIM, the latter of which has only just been picked back up and still doesn't replicate the feature list of even the 5 year old version 4.7; it took Apple to give Mac users any kind of AIM advancement. And let us not even speak of ICQ; we're approaching 6 years of abandonment - nuff said.
In recent versions I've noticed it's stopped crashing every time I log out or quit, so that's some progress.
So, it may be damning YM with faint praise, but of the major official IM service clients, YM is at least conscious, while the others are in comas or, in ICQ's case, rotting in a drawer in the morgue.

Also look at Microsoft messenger before hating (!) Yahoo - Ilgaz
I won't flood here with my message, if you check my message on this site about Microsoft Messenger which is a far more popular download than Yahoo one, you can see that we should be supporting Yahoo in case of this client.http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20090425115432364
At least they converted that joke like carbon application to something cocoa and added features. About the "full" windows specs? Do we really want them? I mean themes, flash animations etc?
It better support the actual core features equally, leave the windows market to windows users.

Actually, this is the fourth year of the beta. The first three years, they provided 2 public releases each plus a compatibility release for Leopard. This year, I think they're serious as this must be the 4th public release already. Perhaps, Yahoo! and Microsoft figured how to get the video and audio working together across clients finally.

Augh!Perfect resume of six years of pains!
I use Skype as much as I can and it's really a pity that iChat stood 'cut of' from the real world of free communication!
Naturally my best choice to 'stay in contact with the windoz users of all other chats is Adium that still has a lot of limits file transfers inclusive.
