Why can't someone make a word processor that uses .doc (or even .docx) format as its native format? Like it or not, the reality is that the Word formats are the standard and are extremely widely used. They are the defacto interchange format for editable files (PDF for non-readable files) and it is a real hassle to use a WP application which has to import and export to these formats. This is the ONE thing which keeps me with Word and I wish it was possible to move away.
Nisus is a good example of a missed opportunity in the real world. It's a good product to use, but its importation of Word files is slow and imperfect. And when saving I have to save two copies - one in Nisus format (to read back in with formatting intact) and one in .doc format (to send to others).
I know that Nisus uses RTF as its own format, but this just doesn't hack it as a real alternative to .doc. And I also know that this may not be a trivial challenge to solve, but that isn't the point - for any application that does address the challenge there are riches awaiting...

And one more detail: if you feel the need of a replacement for Word, OpenOffice and its cousin NeoOffice are the best solution for you. Another solution is Pages.Wednesday, July 01 2009 @ 11:25 AM PDT

You didn't look far - there's a setting in the prefs to configure Nisus to save in MS word format by default...And yes, it's the perfect replacement for word - easily the best WP on the Mac platform at present.

... and you, perhaps, never used .doc format in latest Nisus builds, it is very slow. So let format rtf be its main format to save files, life is brighter in this way.Thursday, July 02 2009 @ 07:04 AM PDT

Yes, I use .doc format in Nisus on a daily basis as I work in a Windows-based corporate environment. I'm a very heavy user of the application & do not find it slow on the hardware I use. I stand by my previous statement.Friday, October 16 2009 @ 01:15 PM PDT

Nisus is NOT a replacement of Word and, even if it were (to a certain extent, it may be labelled so), the .doc format cannot be used as the main format, as both .doc and .docx formats are proprietary formats, they belong to MS. The creators of Nisus may think at THEIR proprietary formats, as ‘classic’ Nisus had, jut like .mellel or .pages, this may seem logical and, perhaps, better from the point of stability and features. From some other simple reasons, the creators of Nisus chose rich text document format, I assume they know why.Reply to This
