I've used it a bit more now and find it a bit better. I found a GPX file that didn't contain any (0,0) coordinates and it drew a nice line for me. Adjusting the slider to set the camera's clock was very slick, I've had to do the sum manually before and wanted a visual way. Here are a few problems that I'd need resolved before I thought about spending any money on it.
Ignore all (0,0) coordinates. This is what GPSBabel writes into GPX files when converting something that didn't have a satellite fix at that instant
Show all the photos that are being processed and allow the user fine grain choice. Just importing an entire folder is too much.
Better underlying base map.The log I had was 10km long and the basemap was entirely one shade of green. Google's terrain map would be awesome but you can't do that if you're selling your software.
Be able to move the map around/zoomin
Don't import directly to iPhoto. Just modify the photos and leave them where they are
Geotagalog
Take full advantage of the Places feature in iPhoto.

If you want a better base map take a look at CloudMade, who use data from the Open Data project OpenStreetMap (think wikipedia, but instead maps).I know there is a bug in a recent version of GPSBabel, which done something like that. I have reverted to using an older version, until I know the bug has been fixed.
