Lag when starting to play

There is a lag (G5 iMac running 10.5.6) when I start to play a song now. It is disconcerting. If I double click the song nothing happens, so I click the play button. Eventually the song starts, but then it takes my click on the play button as clicking on the stop button. I guess I will eventually get used to it, but I do not like it.
