Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: NO

Been running SmartReporter for quite a while now on all 4 of our Macs. Yesterday the HD in my iMac died after "acting funny" all week. Smart Reporter indicated nothing was wrong! Doesn't work very well now does it?!

Didn't Notice My HD Died?!! - Allan Marcus

SMART will only report a failure in advance about 70% of the time. Some failures. It's not a perfect system and has nothing to do with this software.

I also had to replace a hard drive yesterday on an iMac which was failing but the smart status said everything was fine.

I suppose you just have to accept this software can't report on every situation, however, I lost quite a bit a bit of time trouble shooting for software issues because the smart verification made me think the drive itself must be OK. Now I know better.

Read up on SMART technology - zunipus

SMART is not exactly that 'smart'. It's something, but not everything. Wikipedia.org has good coverage of what it can and cannot do.

Personally, I occasionally perform separate tests on my hard drives every now and then. Note that I am a utility freak.
- TechTool Pro is very good at testing hardware, including further aspects of hard drives.
- Drive Genius is very good with even more in depth hard drive testing.
- SpeedTools is reasonable as well.

ATM I'd suggest Drive Genius over the others specifically for hard drive testing, sector test and repair, as well as volume verification.
