"I have to set up quite a few Macs, and as I got tired of always using the terminal to change the hidden preferences of Safari 4". WHY on earth are you setting up Safari 4 on any kind of mass level? What, are you also unleashing the 10.5.7 beta update, and Firefox 3.1rc? That's just poor.
Fine, you want to release something like this to tweak Safari. But the genesis of how it came about sounds like bad IT, particularly since, as you indicate, you're foisting its settings onto every machine you set up, regardless of whether the user wants them or not.

Bad IT? - MarkusWinter
Hmmm, we have eight Macs in our home, and I do the free support for another dozen or so for friends and family which I migrated from PC to Mac over the last few years. Many of them are of the older generation (my father has an iMac and is 76, my uncle has a MacBok and is 72, etc) and are quite resistant to change. How you jump to the conclusion that my handling of this is bad IT is beyond me ...Thursday, March 05 2009 @ 10:45 PM PST

It's simple:1. You say "quite a few Macs". Your version of "quite a few Macs" is chicken-feed to some people. "Quite a few Macs" in the actual IT world is 500, 1000, 5000 or beyond.
2. You ARE foisting your settings onto all unsuspecting users.
3. You ARE installing a BETA version of Safari onto your user's machines. That's just plain bad on its own. I stand by my inquiry of whether you also deploy the 10.5.7 or 3.1rc. You never answered that, you only proposed that your small number of machines makes it okay to destabilize machines owned by other people, so I can only guess by your propensity to push out unfinished software that you probably are.
THAT is bad IT.
One can only assume that you accept full responsibility for the deployment of untested, incomplete software, and that you have no objection to completely re-imaging any and all machines on which Safari 4, Mac OS X 10.5.7, Firefox 3.1rc1, or anything else for that matter, behaves badly on.
If you actually had ANY level of Mac management experience, you would run, Run, RUN away from Safari 4 until it's finished.
Like I said, I have no problem with a tool like this for personal use. But it's the original intent that bothers me. ie: force users to use unfinished software, and force them to use settings that are hidden by their nature, that Apple does not turn on or reveal. It may be fine for you, but you are forcing it onto "your users".
