When EMC bought Dantz, rumors grew that a death knell was ringing and version 6 was the end of the road. Essentially EMC wanted Retrospect for Windoze, ignoring the fact that it had a long reputation as the single best professional backup system for Macintosh. Shame on them. As a result, Retrospect has to be one of the very last programs to go Intel. The delay has been ridiculous, resulting in Retrospect entirely falling off the radar for professional users. Meanwhile a slew of competitors appeared, and all of them were easier to use than Retrospect, if not quite as powerful in capabilities.
I'm not holding my breath for version 8, the sleeping [beauty?] of backup programs, to be a great addition to the Intel compatible family of Mac apps. But at least EMC saw that light and figured out that it was worth moving Retrospect forward into the future for Mac users rather than outright killing it. So I say to give them a chance. Let's see what happens.

If it's been working for you well then you should count your fortunes as truly blessed. As of late version 5.x it's been increasingly flaky on corporate Mac systems and networks, and as of full version 6 downright unusable and problematic in the extreme. It *used* to be the best out there; I dropped it as soon as BRU was stable and usable -- years ago.
Perhaps your requirements of Retrospect were simple. But if you needed corporate LAN backups to rotating tapes, you've been kind of SOL for a while now.

is this a review or a rant? Been using the software for years and it has been working great. I had not the need for it to run on intel hardware.Reply to This
