What does "Free Software Upgrades for One Year" mean?

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

If this edition of the software is free, what exactly does "Free Software Upgrades for One Year" mean? The way it is worded, it sounds like you can try the software for a year, but if you want to keep using it (and you know, get bug fixes or whatever), you need to pay them.

So I guess it's just a way to sucker people into vendor lock-in. You stick your data in their product for a year, then you need to pay to keep accessing it...

That's a bit crass - there's plenty of other tremendously useful freeware apps that are long abandoned or have an indefinite use shareware period with functionality limitations. If you're using the FREE help desk software, find it useful and don't want/need new features, and have no security issues, I can't see why no free updates after a year would be an issue... If it works out of the box, I'll happily use it long past the point it's still supported.

Crass? Hardly. - grh-akl

I'm sure his criticism relates to the perceived deception in the description. If this software is free, it's free. If there is some limitation or problem after a year, then it's not free and there is a lack of disclosure.

If there is a "problem" with the software after the year, I'm sure the developers will take good care of you.
