because it hadn't been updated fully? The size of my Mail app in 10.5.5 is 289MB so that seems to be the normal size.

Before downloading the update (why not in Soft. Upd?), I checked the size of Mail. Mine is version 3.5, and is 289MB. My last update was 10.5.6.

Using some software to reduce the size of Mail?

WHY?

Are you using an old TIMEX computer with practically NO memory?

Or a TRS-80?

Or a PET?

Or even a Mac Classic?

Surely you cannot be strapped for storage space.
