Freeware alternative ... - fltman--2008

There are several freeware and commercial utilities such as the suggested Image Comparitor that locates duplicate files in the filesystem. However, when locating duplicates in iPhoto it is not sufficient to remove the files since the iPhoto library data base will then be corrupted since it points to image files that does no longer exists in the iPhoto library package.

Therefor, a word of advice: Messing with the files in the iPhoto library package or folder may cause a corrupt iPhoto library database and or loss of data. Therefor, be careful when attempting to use a generic duplicate detection tool when hunting for duplicates in iPhoto.

Duplicate Annihilator is not a generic duplicate detection tool but a tool designed especially for iPhoto and only Apples own API's and recommended methods when manipulating the iPhoto library and the images.

The application you suggested searches for duplicates in the finder, not in Photo.

iPhoto is a database. Like any db it requires that you manipulate the data with the application and not using a back door such as the Finder. When you took the photo out with the Finder, iPhoto didn't know the pic is gone.

Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

Duplicate Annihilator works together with iPhoto and locates/deletes the duplicates that way iPhoto likes it.

Ok, the comment above is obviously an ad made by the maker of "Duplicate Annihilator".
If you delete photos from the finder, simply follow these steps:
1) make sure iphoto is not running before deleting the photos from the finder or with another tool
2) when done deleting, start iphoto while pressing command+option. This will show you iphoto options to rebuild the cache, and will cleanup any entries in its database where the photo was deleted.
enjoy.

I tried the sourceforge freeware version first.. it was a barebones little app that did what it said without crashing my iphoto Db or program, but still left me with some duplicates just the same.

Next I tried the annihilator app for 8 bucks and got what I was looking for- plenty of options and a bonus thumbnail annihilator also... which was the real problem in the first place for me...

Good luck, whichever you choose.
