Update not through iTunes - Adam Lloyd

... and how is one supposed to install the SW without iTunes?
Can you provide more details on the reliability/credibility of this claim from the iPhone Dev Team?
Thanks,
rootdr

Update not through iTunes - RJE--2008

What they're saying is do not upgrade at this time. They always refer to a standard upgrade as being done through iTunes. Upgrades should be done via pwnage tool and Quickpwn, if you're into jailbreaking. They will have a new pwnage tool and Qiuickpwn tool available very soon that will allow for an upgrade to 2.2 along with a jailbreak. Their software unlock solution is coming. So for the ones here who believe that an unjailbroken iPhone is just another smartphone, do not upgrade. If you are jailbroken, you'll lose the jailbreak.

Update not through iTunes - RJE--2008

From a spokesman for the Dev Team:

"A new firmware is approaching for the iPhone and with it comes another warning about the dangers of blindly installing new firmware versions before iPhone hacking teams have had a chance to rip it apart and update their software accordingly."

Last word:

"If you want to keep that option of a ‘soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon."

2.2 - duve

I don't understand why we should not apply the update in iTunes because of a future soft unlock. Does Apple intend to open the iPhone to all carriers?

2.2 - RJE--2008

No, Apple will not open the iPhone to all carriers. The iPhone Dev Team will have a software unlock very soon. If you upgrade to 2.2 you jeopardize the chances of the software unlock working on your phone. The Dev Team will, as usual, provide a pwnage solution for the 2.2 upgrade. If you want more than just another smartphone, please wait. Do not upgrade now.

Just for jailbroken phones? - jkb4

Please be clear, is this not updating thing just for people who have hacked their phone?

Just for jailbroken phones? - RJE--2008

If you are a member of the hacked community. If you want a software unlock. If you have a previous jailbreak. If you plan on jailbreaking. Don't upgrade until the Apple Dev Team says so.

Keep checking their blog. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
