Smaller footprint and (as previously mentioned) selectable message refresh interval.I haven't run it long enough to ensure the author doesn't have any memory leaks.
OTOH, this sounds like it's a student project while Google Notifier is an official Google app. It's been my experience that these "student projects" tend to be left to languish and eventually forgotten altogether once said student graduates and gets a paying job with higher priorities.
I use Benjamin Han's superb JunkMatcher as an illustration. While he was a Ph.D. candidate at Carnegie Mellon, JunkMatcher was well maintained and generally considered to be the best spam filter available...it was used as a research project for his dissertation. And it was free. But once Han graduated, the app was abandoned.
That's not an isolated case.
But, of course, this mail notifier is a relatively small project with few updating requirements.

You can set the time interval for checking Gmail in this software; in Google's product, you are stuck at once per minute. That is the only difference I see.Reply to This
