I think it depends on how you like to do things. The split pane option is worth it to me. Compare the prices of ForkLift and DiskOrder (two of the more full-featured programs that offer this), and you'll find that PathFinder's upgrade fee is cheaper. (And Path Finder does more than either of them.) Granted, that might not be a compelling reason for you to upgrade, but it's one possible one for some people.
