I REALLY want to urge the people who make and upload this to add a warning that it is NOT for the everyday user. This is for GEEKS and NERDS ONLY. I want to stress the ONLY part.
I taught myself everything I know about my Mac, mostly by trial and error, more error than trial. CUPS was number 2 on the list of errors. Using Carbon Copy Cloner early on, was the number 1 error.
Apple sorta owns CUPS and does use it to built parts of their system software.
Your printer comes with it's own software OR has already been added to Apple's built in system printer list.
If your printer is working, leave well enough alone. If your printer is not printing, contact the maker of the printer, this is not a fix here.
It's for people who understand UNIX and can even write code. Most people can't set up their own email applications, use PhotoShop, or run simple maintenance, and they are going to start using this to fool around with the systems core, I don't think so. Stay smart, keep it simple, and you will stay happy and so will your computer. Stay away from hacks and beware of beta's. ALWAYS have at least one monthly bootable clone using SuperDuper and AppZapper or AppDelete to get rid of trial apps or apps you no longer want. They get rid of everything that goes with those apps and not just the apps themselves. Don't forget to repair permissions often.
I know all this is common basic stuff, but it's geared toward saving newbies pain and suffering.
Since the CUPS folks aren't putting a warning label on, for the masses of people who think this is just an add on to help printing. It's a deep level hack of your systems core. Backup two clones besides your hard drive. One slave drive and one external firewire or usb hard drive, in case you clone something bad to your slave.
If you only have one Hard Drive with one partition, just sell your soul now, cause that's just dumb. Back up, Back up, Back up.
The rest of you know what you're doing, so pass go and collect 200.00. Take my wife, PLEASE.
