It's always better for everyone concerned when the customer is advised BEFOREHAND that an upgrade is to be paid for. (Yes, the info is available on the developer's site but not on this site.)

Upgrade fee protocols - drtimothyjames

It would be helpful information. Long-time users of PathFinder know that every time they jump up to a new number, there's an upgrade fee; new users should be told that. Historically, once you've purchased, all upgrades through a particular version are free (i.e., all versions of 5.x are likely to be free).
