I haven't used this. It certainly looks to be very helpful. But what I want is a program that forces the Finder to remember column width settings in Finder windows and to force any new window (with column view) to have a predetermined column with setting. I've seen nothing like this. I use PathFinder because it does allow me to do both (not to mention that it gives me icon and font sizes that I can actually see). Anyone know of any program that does to the Finder what I want? I've certainly tried programs that restore window settings, but not one of them actually restores the column widths to what I had set. They always go immediately to the minimalist default setting.

Incredible! I've been looking for this for years, and it you found the secret! And it still works in 10.5!Only it works a little differently: hold down option while widening the columns and all the other windows' columns change, too. No need to click on the finder icon: you're adjusting the default as you adjust the column.
In 10.4, it's still the option key with no need to click the finder icon. However, the column sizes in other open windows don't change at the same time.

I cannot get your instructions to work on my new 2.4 GHz Aluminum MacBook running 10.5.6. I opened 3 Finder windows, then held down the alt/option key while changing different column widths, but it only changed on that 1 window -- the other Finder windows' columns did not change. Am I doing it wrong? Here's something I would dearly like to see implemented in the next 10.5 update: When I set the Show View Options (in Finder it's under the View menu item) for Finder windows in List view to Calculate All Sizes, it doesn't stick after a logout or restart, even if I set it to Use As Defaults. The only way I can get this to stick permanently is to do a very lengthy Automator operation on all windows.

I was looking for the same thing & discovered it's BUILT IN toTiger. When you open a new finder window, set the size you want & set the pane size using alt/drag, then BEFORE clicking any folder, click the finder icon in the dock, this memorizes window size, position & pane size. It will remember settings for any finder window eg desktop, folder, HDD etc. Hope this helps!Reply to This
