Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Neat idea, but I had some problems. I am running Leopard (10.5.5) on an Intel Core Duo Mac Mini.

The first problem I discovered is that not all of my screen savers are available to Wallsaver.

I use iPhoto '08, which adds a lot of items to the list of screen savers in System Preferences: each of my events shows up as a possible screen saver, as does "Flagged," which shows all the photos I have flagged in iPhoto, and which I use for my actual screen saver. However, when I go to select a screen saver module for Wallsaver, these options are not present in the list that Wallsaver gives me to choose from.

(At this point, I'm sure some readers are ready to suggest the RandomExtra workaround, so I'll save you the trouble: I tried it. I went to the RandomExtra options and chose "Flagged" as my only module. When I activated my screen saver to test it, it worked just as expected: it displayed my flagged photos from iPhoto. However, when I went to Wallsaver and selected RandomExtra as my module for Wallsaver and activated it, I got a black desktop with the following message in the middle: "Something is wrong! I am sad that I cannot pick a module for you. -- RandomExtra")

So I settled on another module, and then I discovered the second, more serious problem: when Wallsaver is running a screen saver module as my desktop background, I cannot start my actual screen saver, either by Hot Corner or by idle time. (The Test button in the Screen Saver preference pane still works, but I can't activate the screen save "for real" unless I first deactivate Wallsaver.) Since I rely on the screen saver to secure the computer when not in use, this problem means I cannot use Wallsaver.
System Info:I am running Leopard (10.5.5) on an Intel Core Duo Mac Mini.

Followup:

I tried Screeni, which provides similar functionality. It had no problem using "Flagged" as my desktop background, but did have the same problem that I could not activate the screen saver while the screen saver module was being used as my desktop background.

Then I tried DeskSaver. Same problem.

This suggests one of two obvious explanations:

1) Apple broke something with a recent update to the OS.

2) There's a problem that is unique to my system.

I should have explored the application more carefully before posting. I didn't even notice the "Extras" menu. (The application is a strange combination of a dialog-based app and a menu-based app. The commands in the Extras menu should probably be available in a pane on the dialog.)

Anyway, there is a "Launch Screen Saver" command in the menu. So to launch the screen saver, you launch Wallsaver, and then select this command from the menu.

It's not as convenient as a Hot Corner, and it doesn't replace the functionality of automatically launching the screen saver when the system is idle, but at least it's something. Maybe the developer can improve the way this works in future versions.

Also, there is an option to use the same screen saver as the system instead of selecting a screen saver in Wallsaver. When I use this option, the "Flagged" screen saver module runs as the desktop just fine.
