DANGEROUS: Throttled Turns OFF MOSX Firewall

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

Note folks, this is still beta software. Usually I would not give a star rating to a beta program, but this is an exception. I don't believe anyone should be using Throttled if what I discovered is a universal problem.

Good stuff: I found setting up the CLI version of Throttled to be easy thanks to the very good notes that are provided within the script itself. Bravo! (Always be sure to keep a locked source copy of the provided script and only work on a copy). I had no problem running it and was quite pleased to find that Throttled installs a startup item so that the script reruns itself at each startup. Who needs the Pro version GUI? Not me!

However, I no longer use Throttled for one critical reason:

BAD STUFF: Throttled turns OFF the Mac OS X Firewall. My testing is only in 10.4.11. I will be further testing in Leopard. Why it does this is beyond my comprehension. The fact that it does this is DANGEROUS. No way am I using Throttled again until this nasty blunder is solved. It comes down to this: The possibility of my Mac being invaded and compromised is not worth minor speedups in Internet access.

Conclusion: Watch this software for a solution to the Firewall blunder. Meanwhile: DO NOT USE Throttle.

Caveat: Someone please find a workaround for this dangerous problem or prove to me that it is harmless. I'd like to champion this program.

DANGEROUS: Throttled Turns OFF MOSX Firewall - timtatwork

Most people have a hardware firewall (router) these days so it really isn't that big of deal. A hardware firewall is more secure anyway. I'm not so sure that it disables the Mac OS X firewall as much as it reconfigures it. The Control Panel will not let you make changes but I think you can manually.

Firewall works fine... - zquestz

The post is not accurate. This is from the Throttled Pro FAQ.

-------
• Does Throttled Pro work with Apple's built in firewall?
Yes, however in order to configure the firewall you will need to stop Throttled Pro. After the firewall is configured, turn on Throttled Pro and everything will work just fine. We make sure your internet connection is always safe.
-------

Basically what happens is, you setup the firewall and turn it on. Then you enable Throttled Pro and it adds its own rules to the existing firewall.

When you go into the firewall options in System Preferences it alerts you that other firewall software is running because it doesn't recognize the throttled rules that have been added, however you are still being protected as long as the firewall was on before throttled was started.

The startup item included with Throttled Pro automatically adds its rules after the firewall is turned on, making sure your firewall is always working if you have it on.
