For all of you that get a black screen when starting this app, the issue also happens with the previous version; at least to me.
This application uses Java and it's not compatible with Java 6 (64-bit for Intel Mac).
A workaround is to open Applications -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Preferences and make J2SE 5.0 the default Java VM for both applications and web pages.
I had other Java apps behave strangely on Java SE6. There are several changes on this release and older java apps might no longer work. This is a general issue with Java 6 and it's not specific to the Apple port.

I still can't get this to work. I'm on an Intel Mac running 10.5.5.

If I use Java 5, I get the splash screen, and it freezes when the splash screen bar is done. Same with Java 1.4.2. Have to force quit.

If I use Java 6, I get the same thing, PLUS a black window. Splash screen still lingers until I force quit.

If I try to see what it's doing, it looks like it is trying to communicate with "www.apple.com".
