Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Have Not Tried

Recommend Product: NO

I've followed the Omni group from their origins as a NeXT developer through their establishing themselves as a premier Mac OSX developer. I get excited when I see a new Omni application, as I've come to expect I'll find something extremely well thought out, well designed and useful, and more often than not an application that I'll be able to use and immediately get value from.

Not wanting to knock OmniGrowl as a product, as it may very well be useful and well designed, but it's use of 'Omni' in the application title doesn't seem to have any basis in the functionality of the product, and it's not an Omni application, which I found very disappointing.

I can appreciate that this developer has reasons for using the name, and hopefully they are not in the hopes of getting more attention than would be received with a less confusing name. I would suggest that using Omni for a software product isn't unlike using 'Coke' for a soft drink, or 'Mercedes' for an automobile - even if you think you've got a legal loophole, it's still not good practice as you're misleading your and Omni's potential customers, and that's just not good business.

The prefix 'Omni' confused me too - Wooden Brain

Thank you for your comments. This has, as you are aware, been discussed before. We assure you that there is no deliberate intent to confuse anyone. If we had realized how confusing it might be we may have chosen a different name initially. But now it is a known product and it is unlikely that we will decide to change it. It is a large hassle from both a development and a marketing perspective.

We chose the name precisely because the latin prefix "Omni" means "all". The concept of OmniGrowl is to provide (nearly) all practical notifications in a single application. With notifications for events, to-dos, birthdays, anniversaries, news feeds, weather, traffic, network and power changes, and more, we believe it accomplishes this goal very well. In contrast, what "all" does any single Omni Group application implement? Again, the Omni Group produces great and quality software, but the only actual use of the meaning of "Omni" for the Omni Group is that all their software uses it in their name. WBC is using "Omni" for its intended meaning and not as a brand.

In this respect it's not like "Coke" -- it's like "i" in "iTunes" or "iCal" and how many developers use "i" for Mac products who are not Apple?
