Very Odd Finder Behavior

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Disclaimer: I did not purposely run the installer, so I can't say that this behavior is the result of AppleJack. I did however, click on the readme a number of times and may have accidentally clicked on the AppleJack installer. At any rate, downloading AppleJack and attempting to look at the readme immediately resulted in a series of extremely odd behaviors in roughly this order.

1. Textedit would not display the Readme
2. GetInfo would not work with the Readme file
3. Windows would drag around but almost no other Finder activity worked.
4. Cmd-opt-esc would display the Force Quit window but with no active processes to quit, preventing me from restarting the Finder.
4. Then the menu bar disappeared and Cmd-opt-esc quit displaying Force Quit
5. At that point I could do nothing but shut my last-model white Intel iMac down using the power button on the back.

I've never seen anything like that before. Powering up again, everything seemed normal. But running Repair Permissions gave the following results after the usual long list of "ACL found" messages.

****
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Public".
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions differ on "Library", should be drwxrwxr-t , they are drwxrwxr-x .

Permissions repair complete
****

I've not seen the last message and I'm not sure the precise meaning -t versus -x,, but altered permissions on Library could trigger a host of ills.

Running Verify Disk in Disk Utility turned up no other problems.

I've not had any problems since, but I am not confident enough this weirdness won't happen again to install AppleJack, particularly given the other posted problem with kernel panics.

Very Odd Finder Behavior - Mathue

I can't see how you could install this and not be fully aware that you did, the installer works the same as any other OS X installer which requires several clicks and even a radio button selection. Not to mention that AppleJack is run in Single User Mode and not when OS X is fully booted. I think what you saw was completely coincidence :)

Very Odd Finder Behavior - macguruguy

You wouldn't be able to "accidentally install this. It runs through several buttons which ask if you want to install the software and where. It just doesn't install by double-clicking the package.

Furthermore, this program only runs in the Single-User mode, which requires you to boot your machine using Cmd-S when starting up.

The errors that you are showing randomly appear on my machines, and according to the reports I've read, this is not an uncommon message. Sometimes they cannot be repaired, but are nothing to worry about.

Also, there are uninstall instructions contained in the read me file, which would uninstall the program if you need to remove it.

You were probably experiencing something with your machine at the time you opened the read me.

This is a GREAT piece of software, which has saved my machine (and several machines at work) many times.
