Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: YES

Message from the developer of DV Backup:

In defence against the allegation that DV Backup is spyware, made by "ramcito" in a previous review, DV Backup is not spyware and never has been spyware. The product has no malicious use whatsoever.

The aforementioned reviewer also alleges that the developer ceased communication with him as a result of his review being published. This is also untrue. Furthermore the developer continued to offer support until it became apparent that the user was not acting in a bona fide manner.

The developer believes that the motives of this individual in making these allegations are entirely vexed, and so they should be ignored for this reason as well as for the fact that they are untrue.

Response from the developer... - ThrowAwayAccount

I just downloaded the standard demo and tested it with my camera. It works... but it does try to establish a connection to "web-uk.onetel.net.uk on TCP port 80 (http)" as reported by Little Snitch.

I looked for an option to disable this "phone home" which I'll first gave the benefit of the doubt that it's a version check. But there is no option to disable this.

So, what gives? I'm very suspicious after seeing the other note talking about Spyware...

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Almost a paying customer

This mechanism has a bona fide purpose, which is to help defeat fraudulent and other unauthorised use of DV Backup.

I am not surprised at your reaction at the behaviour of the software. The developer states that this connection is a measure to stop illegal use of his software. While it may achieve that purpose it also exposes you to a variety of security issues.

The question you have to ask yourself is if you want software whose stated purpose is to perform backups onto DV cameras executing arbitrary processes on your system in the name of "preventing illegal use".

I would hope that most users are like me, and they want their can opener to open cans only.

You are right to be concerned because:
1) The connection you saw is used to download lists of users that aren't authorised to run the software anymore.
2) Through DNS spoofing, other hijacking methods or simply if the developer wishes it, your computer can be forced to execute arbitrary code.
3) My previous review describes this behaviour in 1.4.2 and apparently it hasn't changed in 1.4.3.

I have never used this software successfully and I encourage all prospective users of this software to reconsider their purchase and look at other alternatives to this software.

1) Your software phones home to download lists of users that aren't allowed to run your software any more.
2) It is possible through DNS spoofing and a variety of other methods for the average user to have his machine hijacked.
3) I have never sucessfully used your software, and I encourage all users looking at this software as prospective buyers to look elsewhere for all the reasons I mention in my review.
