I did update 2.0.1 on my Iphone 1st generation. It is a brick now.
Have latest version of Itunes/OS X on 17" MacBook Pro 2.4 gig, 4 gig RAM (mid 2007)

I have done the force reset by holding Home and Sleep Buttons and when I click Restore in iTunes
the error message "unknown error (6)" comes up when trying to
"prepare phone for upgrade" in iTunes, after selecting Restore.
ITunes says it 'has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, you must
restore this phone". I think maybe the 249mb file is corrrupt.
Where can I download it again? Or delete it on my hard drive to
force iTunes to redownload? Thanks in advance.

Be sure that you're connecting the iPhone DIRECTLY to the USB cable, and not through the iPhone dock. Also, make sure that the cable is DIRECTLY connected to your computer, not to a USB hub. See if that helps. It did for me.
