Does anyone know if you can put password protection on the Zip files that you create with this program?
Nope. Some alternatives: - zunipus
YemuZip does not have password protection. Use other options, many of which are free. You can either encrypt and password protect your .ZIP file or use another utility to do the whole show.Apple's Disk Utility comes with Mac OS X will let you create a .DMG file that is:
1) Compressed
2) Encrypted
3) Password Protected
4) Data integrity self-verifying
Freeware options:
- 7zX - compression, encryption and password protection
- RarMe - compression and password protection
- GPG (Gnu Privacy Gaurd) - encryption and password protection
These days, if you are going to password protect an archive, you might as well encrypt it. Mac OS X Panther and Tiger offer 128 bit AES encryption, which is excellent. Mac OS X Leopard offers 256 bit AES encryption, which theoretically is beyond human or computer capability to crack.
The weakness with encryption or password protected files is the password you use. It must be as obscure and as long as you can stand it to be. Never ever use a common word, phrase, person's name or just a set of numbers. All of these are rapidly cracked by easily available cracking programs these days. Password Assistant is part of Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard and can help you choose good passwords. There are some more accessible freeware alternatives as well. My favorite is:
- PW-Creator
Apple's Keychain and similar programs are terrific for letting you use all the obscure passwords you like without having to actually remember them. Instead you remember one and only one difficult password, which in turn opens the Keychain and lets you access all your other passwords. Alternatives to Keychain include:
- KeyMaster - Freeware
- 1Password - An ultimate, bells and whistles keychain for $35. Well worth it IMHO. Read about it to see why.
